![]() We still see corpses, the suffering of civilians, and we hear of the atrocities, but not nearly so often as earlier, and the narrator, Robert Powell, describes the goings on as if reading from a technical manual. By the time of this documentary (2009), the war is treated as an awesome and terrible historic event, but one that can be looked at almost as moves in a geopolitical chess game. Later, "The World At War" (1973) regards the war itself as appalling, an emotional experience as much as anything else. ![]() Listen to the narrator's pronunciation of "the Japanese", with it's built-in sneer bespeaking disgust. In early series, like "Victory at Sea" (1952), only seven years after the end of the war, the enemy is still faceless and brutal. It's interesting to compare the TV documentaries about the war from the perspective of their public appearance. The viewer hardly notices the effects after a while. Some of the footage is familiar from black and white documentaries, but the colorization process has advanced since the earlier, crude attempts by Ted Turner and others. On the other side, the chief allies are Britain, Russia, and the USA. Let's summarize it this way, just for the kids: Germany, Italy, and Japan start World War II around 1939. Not just the principals but my Uncle Flory who was a corporal in the infantry, Hockey who was an aviation ordnance man in the Navy, a German guy I met in a bar in Italy who had served in the Wehrmacht on the Russian front, and my father-in-law who was an air raid warden in Philadelphia. I will now present you with a detailed history of the war in its entirety, along with an extensive psychoanalytic analysis of every person involved. This long TV series, narrated by Robert Powell, whose tone expresses earnest and dispassionate interest, deals with World War II both in the East and West. Don't just watch, READ, READ, READ the books that were published before 1960. As the last of the participants pass from this life, there can be no more "factual" accounts. You can tell a good story with the films, but unless you have spent years studying the contemporary histories, from both sides. The civilian casualties were indeed great, but that was the choice of the Japanese occupiers and how many would've died, either of brutality or starvation had the islands been bypassed? The further we get from WWII, the less accurate do the "documentaries" become. one with a knife and the other with a machine gun, only the fool deals with the knife first! There were American POWs held in the Phillipines. Every previous naval victory in WWII had come at the hands of the aircraft carriers, NOT the battleships. Halsey had every reason to have believed that the Northern force was less a threat than Ozawa's aircraft carrier force which had just been spotted. It was politically imperative! Likewise, the episode maintained that the "Northern arm" of the Japanese pincer had "only pretended to retreat and under cover of darkness had reversed course." both Japanese and American accounts, much closer to the event when interviews with actual participants were available, indicated that the Northern force actually intended to retreat and only reversed course following critical comments from the high command. To ignore a chance to liberate the Phillipines would have been no different than leaving Paris in German hands while liberating Holland and Belgium. MacArthur may have left, but Phillipine guerrillas had been fighting and dying against the Japanese with US supplies and coordination from the very beginning. Because the USA had a commitment to the Phillipine people as a protectorate, it was politically necessary to return as soon as was humanly possible. Therefore, foreign policy has to be considered in the strategy of the war. War is, quite simply, foreign policy pursued by other means. ![]() However, that totally fails to recognize that in war, there are both military and political concerns and that grand strategy requires the consideration of both. The segment "The Island War" treats the liberation of the Phillipines as an unnecessary and overly costly (and therefore ill-advised) operation.

In fact, as keys and tubes were added to the French horn to expand its capacity, Richard famously tested the limits of these new instruments in his tone poems and large symphonic works. Franz’s concerto written in 1865 was for an instrument not as technically developed as the French horn in Richard’s day. The difference in French horn development might also have contributed to the contrasting styles. Franz was known for his unmatched French horn tone, so it is no surprise that his concerto presents challenges in that regard. In contrast to Richard Strauss’s horn concerto that stretched the performer’s technical ability, Franz’s focus is more on tone and melodic phrasing. Second, since we just talked about Richard Strauss, it is appropriate to discuss the French horn concerto by his father, Franz Strauss.Īs mentioned earlier, Franz Strauss was a prominent horn player in his day, and he wrote only one concerto for French horn. 1 became one of the most popular and frequently-played solo horn pieces in the twentieth century. After the first performance, Strauss’s French horn Concerto No. Franz was notorious for criticizing the modernism of Richard’s compositions. Notice that Franz declined for technical reasons, not musical, which speaks for the music. Franz Strauss was intending to premier the piece, but passed the honor onto Gustav Leinhos after declaring “the numerous high notes too risky.” (Brittanica). Strauss’s first French horn concerto is considered one of the hardest in the repertoire, according to Brittanica and other sources, since it spans both ends of the horn’s range. ![]() Typically, the orchestra is the first to present the theme in the first movement, then the soloists enters with its own version before proceeding to development and recapitulation. ![]() What is unique, however, is how the horn introduces the opening heroic theme with the orchestra entering later with a celebratory repeat of that theme. The piece is heroic in character, beginning and ending triumphantly, and although the slow section comes without a pause, it overall follows the normal three-movement structure of a concerto. Richard’s father was also known to be a stubborn conservative when it came to music, which explains why this first horn concerto sounds quite traditional compared to his other famous works. Because Richard grew up hearing the French horn played by his father, it made sense for him to compose two concerti for the instrument. ![]() Premiered in 1885, the piece was written for Richard’s father, Franz Strauss, who was the principal French horn player of the Munich Court Orchestra (although Franz did not premier the piece). This famous concerto is one of two works for solo French horn and rather short compared to Strauss’s other concerti for oboe and violin. Almost all of these pieces were written for French horn and orchestra, but all have arrangements for horn and piano available for purchase. In this article, we will explore five French horn solos (not in a particular order) that directors commonly pick and are frequently found on audition lists. For the French horn, there are a few significant pieces that should be at the top of everyone’s list to prepare. If you are preparing for an audition, whether it is for college or an ensemble, you are probably digging into solo repertoire.
